Los Bomberos De Los Angeles are hosting their 1st Annual Toy Drive and couls use our support! Please join us in collecting new, unwrapped toys for children who might not otherwise have a happy holiday. In addition, for every toy you donate, you will receive a free bowl of Menudo soup, coffee, and pan dulce pastry - valuable gifts in themselves! Your generosity will bring joy to countless children and families!

Great day at the 43rd Annual #LaborDay Parade in Wilmington, grilling more than 1,000 hot dogs for our brothers and sisters in labor. Also connecting with friends, including Tim McOsker for L.A. City Council and Mitch O'Farrell, who support our #LAFD firefighters and paramedics. We see you and we got your back.

The UFLAC Fire Foundation, a non-profit organization designed to support firefighters and their families, is proud to announce another round of scholarship award winners. 2 years ago, LAFD Captain Scott Souter from Station 35 was involved in a serious mountain bike accident that left him with severe physical and mental limitations. To assist Brother Souter with the full-time care he needs, fellow firefighters came together to help organize the Scott Souter Charity Golf Tournament. It's taking place on Tuesday, October 11th at the Tijeras Creek Golf Course. Golf and dinner is $150 a person and event sponsorship are available for those interested. It is with great sadness that we join our brothers and sisters at the Los Angeles County Fire Department in mourning the passing of our brother, Firefighter Jonathan Flagler, who lost his life early today from injuries sustained while battling a home fire. Fire Fighter Flagler was a 21-year veteran of the fire service, serving 19 years with the Vernon Fire Department before transitioning to the LACoFD in October of 2020. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife and two sons. #IAFF

Bill is survived by his wife, daughter, and son.

Captain James was hired in 2000 and was currently assigned to Fire Station 85 “C”.

On International Firefighters Day we thank all the Firefighters around the world who have dedicated their lives to helping others. #LAFD

Every firefighter takes an oath to save lives and be there for our communities … helping people on their worst day. While this service is what firefighters are called to do, the accumulation of all those “worst days” takes its toll on even the strongest of us.

Answering the call of duty took on a new meaning this past year. Firefighters were on the front lines addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, even as they stood up to an epic wildfire season. These pressures add to the already overwhelming stress firefighters face every day on the job.

Firefighter behavioral health remains the biggest health and safety challenge facing our profession. Our members continue to die at their own hand in greater numbers than in traumatic line-of-duty deaths. We can’t put mental health on the backburner, and we can’t succumb to the stigma that causes so many to suffer in silence.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and once again the California Fire Service Behavioral Health Task Force is urging all fire departments to unite for a Behavioral Health and Suicide Awareness Stand Down.

From May 17th through the 21st, California Professional Firefighters, California Fire Chiefs Association, Cal-OES and the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee urge all agencies to set aside time to conduct exercises and initiate a conversation on mental wellness.

The Behavioral Health Task Force will be providing both print and digital materials in the coming weeks to help you get the conversation started. Preventing suicide in the fire service starts with each and every one of us checking in on our own, having the uncomfortable conversations and opening the door to breaking the stigma that speaking up is a weakness.

We must unite as a fire service to address this challenge – the lives and health of our firefighters depends on it. May 17th through the 21st, let’s work together to bring the darkness to light. Firefighter specific resources are always available at healingourown.org. #healingourown

UFLAC, LAFD, AND STEVENS NATION JOIN FORCES TO SUPPORT ALS AWARENESS

UFLAC, LAFD, and Stevens Nation have joined forces to promote and support ALS Awareness during the month of May. As you know, we recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and participate in “Movember” during “No Shave November” to bring awareness to men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Now it is time to raise awareness for all those diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), including one of our own Firefighters, Eric Stevens.

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT WEBINAR TONIGHT

Who hasn’t found themselves experiencing conflict from time to time, whether at home or at work? Take a moment and think back to the last conflict or two that you have been involved with… Was it with your spouse or significant other? Was it with your child or teenager? Or was it at work with your boss or a co-worker? As you know from your own experiences, conflict can be a very uncomfortable and challenging thing to go through.

Conflict Management is “the process of limiting or eliminating negative aspects of conflict while creating solutions to increase positive outcomes.”

United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, Local 112 and the Los Angeles Fire Department invite you and/or your significant other to join us for a webinar designed to help improve your understanding and increase your ability to navigate conflict in both your personal and professional life.

We will have a panel presentation led by subject matter expert Anita Avedian, MFT, along with Peer Support Team members Chief Nikki Brodowy and Captain Charles Boswell, EAP Director Nancy Mraz, and Director of Behavioral Health Dr. Steve Froehlich.

FRANK LIMA WINS HISTORIC ELECTION

Former UFLAC President wins landslide election for
IAFF General Secretary-Treasurer

UFLAC Brothers and Sisters,

Former UFLAC President and current LAFD Captain II Frank Lima has won a historic election to serve as the next General Secretary-Treasurer for the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). With his victory, brother Lima is the first LAFD / Local 112 member in history to win an election to serve as a principal officer with the IAFF.

In a crowded three-person field Frank Lima captured more than 70% of the vote, defeating a fire chief from the FDNY and the former Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington State Professional Firefighters.

Frank Lima served as the President of UFLAC Local 112 for four years from 2012 to 2016. For the past four years, he has served as the elected 10th District Vice President of the IAFF where he represented all professional firefighters in the states of California, Arizona, Hawaii and New Mexico in addition to the territory of Guam. In his role as the 10th District Vice President, Frank was instrumental in helping the LAFD receive nearly $26 million dollars in federal grants through the SAFER program and other FEMA related opportunities.

On Wednesday, March 10th, Frank was sworn in as the next General Secretary-Treasurer for the IAFF where he will be the number two principal officer in our international union representing more than 320,000 professional firefighters in the United States and Canada. At his swearing in ceremony Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Council President Nury Martinez, City Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, and Fire Chief Terrazas joined the UFLAC Executive Board to commemorate this very special occasion.

We wish our brother Frank Lima all the best and look forward to his continuing work to benefit the LAFD and Local 112 members.
